
Saville Middle School is celebrating their freedom to read, Sept. 28th- October 2nd. Several contests and activities have been planned to promote your freedom to read. We have a display set-up in the media center for the event. Students are invited to take mug shots with a banned book, participate in a "Shelfie" photo activity, create a bookmark or poem to reflect a children's book that has been on the banned booklist, and answer trivia questions after the morning annoucements.

Banned Books Week
Sept. 28th to Oct. 2nd

Bookmark Contest: The library and ELA teachers will have blank bookmarks available for decoration. Students may decorate the bookmark to reflect a children’s book that has been banned. See the list of banned books at http://asavagelibrarian.yolasite.com/banned-book-week.php. There will be one 6th, 7th, and 8th grade winner and a STAFF winner too. Please create your bookmark in black ink or pencil. No colors please. Turn your bookmark into Mrs. Savage by 3:00 on Wednesday, September 30th. Winners will be
announced on Tuesday, October 6th and will get a bronze medal and $10 to spend at the next book fair.
“Shelfie” Photography Actvity: Take a “selfie” with one of your favorite banned books in front of a book shelf for our “Banned Book Week Photo Contest.” Make sure one of your favorite banned books is clearly featured in the “shelfie” with you. Email your “shelfie” to me at jasavage@interact.ccsd.net or use a library camera to take a “shelfie” in the library.
Banned Book Mug Shots: Students and staff are invited to take a mug shot with a banned book. Mug shots will be taken in the library Sept. 28th – Oct. 2nd. A video slideshow of these shots will be shared during library visits in October.
Banned Books Week Poetry Contest: Calling all Saville poets! W
e’re on the lookout for poems of all styles – rhyming, free verse, haiku, and more–for the 2015 Banned Books Week Poetry Contest! Create a poem about book banning and your freedom to read or about a character/event in a book that has been on the banned book list. Poems must original and must be submitted by 3:30 on September 30th. A winner from each grade level will be announced on Tuesday, October 6th during the morning announcements and will receive $10 to spend at the next book fair.

Trivia Question: Students and teachers will listen to a passage from a banned book during daily morning announcements. If ANYONE (not a class) knows what book the passage is from, he or she can write down the answer and bring it to the library before lunch that day. Students must write his or her answer on a piece of scratch paper with his or her name and grade. Mrs. Savage will draw one correct answer from each grade level each day. The winner will receive a prize. All winners will be announced on Tuesday, October 6th
during the morning announcements.
